Associate Professor George Mangos

A/Prof Mangos is Head of Department, Renal Medicine, St George Hospital.  He is a Clinical Academic in The St George and Sutherland Clinical School, UNSW, Staff Nephrologist and Obstetric Medicine Physician, St George Hospital.  His clinical interests include treatment resistant hypertension, general nephrology and obstetric medicine.  His research interests include hypertension in pregnancy especially related to post-partum cardiovascular health, pre-eclampsia and its prediction and cardiovascular physiology.

Professor Sunil Badve

Professor Sunil Badve is a Senior Staff Specialist in Nephrology at St George Hospital, Sydney; Conjoint Professor of Medicine at UNSW Medicine; and Program Lead, Cardiometabolic Trials, Renal and Metabolic Division at the George Institute for Global Health. He obtained his nephrology training in Mumbai, India and Ottawa, Canada and has been practising as a consultant nephrologist in Australia since 2009. He was awarded PhD by the University of Queensland in 2016 for a thesis ‘Therapeutic interventions to improve clinical outcomes in advanced chronic kidney disease’.

Professor Badve’s research focus is in randomised controlled trials, meta-analyses and epidemiology, particularly in progression of chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, and associated mortality in chronic kidney disease. He has received more than $12 million NHMRC research funding as a chief investigator.

Professor Badve is the Nephrology Subject Editor for the Internal Medicine Journal and serves on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases. He is a fellow of the Australasian College of Physicians and the American Society of Nephrology.

Professor Mark A Brown

Professor Brown is a Senior Staff Nephrologist and Medical Director of the Division of Medicine at St George Hospital and Professor of Renal Medicine at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. His clinical activities include general nephrology with specific interests in Renal Supportive Care, health for the homeless, obstetric medicine and hypertension, including hypertension in pregnancy. He has a 30 year history of involvement in medical education, has published over 250 peer reviewed papers and book chapters and received several awards for his work including an Order of Australia award in 2018.

Associate Professor Ivor Katz

I am a senior staff specialist in the St George Hospital Renal Department with a conjoint appointment with UNSW.

My research interests and PhD were and remain in public health and chronic kidney disease (CKD). I has a particular interest in detecting, risk stratifying and managing people with high-risk kidney and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and then linking specialists with primary care clinicians for the management of these diseases.

Dr Kelly Li

Dr Franziska Pettit

Franziska Pettit is a staff specialist at St George Hospital and a conjoint lecturer with the University of New South Wales. She is the current director of peritoneal dialysis at St George Hospital and has both clinical and research interests in Obstetric Medicine and management of high risk pregnancies. In addition to this she is co-director of physician’s training at St George and term supervisor within the department for junior staff rotating through. She has presented and published on her research in obstetric medicine.

Dr Brendan Smyth

Brendan Smyth is a Staff Specialist at St George Hospital, post-doctoral fellow at NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre and honorary fellow at The George Institute for Global Health. His research focus is clinical trials and research methodology, with a particular interest in haemodialysis.

He has experience in clinical trial development, implementation and analysis; and is a leading member of the International Society of Nephrology Advancing Clinical Trials (ISN-ACT) group, including driving the creation of the ISN-ACT Clinical Trials Toolkit. In addition to journal publications, he has contributed textbook chapters and designed and delivered nephrology teaching courses at a masters level. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and is an Associate Editor for Kidney Blood Pressure Research.
